We will be happy to arrange any of the following experiences for you:
HORSEBACK RIDING
CICLYNG
NATURE WALKS
PALM WATCHING
SURFING
Right in front of Casa Bonita, you will find Bahoruco Beach, called by many “the pearl of the south”. It has the biggest waves of the area. Surrounded by the local and friendly community and if frequently visited by our surfers and also internationals.
BIRD WATCHING
More than 300 bird species have been recorded in The Dominican Republic, including 27 amazing endemic species more than any other Caribbean island. The southwestern part of the island has the best birding, especially the Sierra de Bahoruco which includes a variety of habitats such as dry thorn scrub and mountain pine forests. Bahoruco contains one of the highest bird densities in the Caribbean.
EL QUEMAITO BEACH
This popular pebble beach in Barahona, gets its name from the warmth of its waters, sand and gravel ["quemar" in Spanish means to burn] . At 10 kilometers from the city, and 10 minutes from Casa Bonita, along the Barahona-Paraiso highway, Quemaíto Beach gets the white foam from the waves of the crystalline Caribbean Sea, and has a strip of golden sand that is fused with the green mountainous landscape. The beach can be appreciated with all the natural freshness that went into its making, embraced by green mountains and lofty palm trees. While it doesn't have a tourist infrastructure, you can find little restaurants or food stalls with typical food.
VILLA MIRIAN
This is a natural spa with very cold water, ideal for a dip in a natural environment, far removed from the noise of the city. Reservations can be made to visit it through the Casa Bonita or by contacting authorized tourist guides.
SAN RAFAEL BEACH
One of the main beaches and the most frequented in the whole area, is a combination of the forceful oceanic waves and a natural swimming pool, created by nature, at the mouth of the San Rafael River. Added to that is the splendor of the surrounding green mountains and the coastal areas that decorate both the coastline and the beach.
JARAGUA NATIONAL PARK
One of the natural treasures that the Dominican Republic offers the world is located very near the Haitian border. In 1983, in Pedernales, the largest system of protected areas and parks in the country was set up. This includes extensive marine areas and two islands, with a surface area of 1.374 km², (536 on land, 48 insular and 790 marine). The park includes natural resources of great ecological and historical value. The Bahia de Aguilas (Bay of Eagles) is probably the best tourist attraction. Its lagoons and caves, with numerous pictograms, petroglyphs and jars used by the Tainos in pre-Columbian times can be admired. This is a worthwhile experience both for bird-watching lovers and for those interested in historical tourism.
BAHIA DE LAS AGUILAS (EAGLES BAY)
This beach is located in the grounds of the national park, the Jaragua, 31 kilometers south of Pedernales and 135 km from Barahona. Here you can actually see the sunset reflected in the water during golden twilights. Opposite a crystalline beach and the semi desert vegetation of the Caribbean Sea, with fine white sand and water that barely goes up to your knees for several meters, this is living proof of the greatness of an earthly paradise. The cactus, the rocks and vibrant blue waters that mirror a pure, coastal sky, joined as in a perfect plot to make an impression on any pair of eyes that behold this remarkable scenery. It is recommendable to bring with your excursion equipment sun umbrellas and sun protectors because of the strong rays of the sun that shine in their entire splendor over the lack of trees for shade.
THE PELEMPITO HOLE
The Bahoruco Mountain range cradles the greatest registered geologic depression in the whole country, over 1.000 Mts. in depth, surrounding the provinces of Barahona, Independencia and Pedernales. It owes its origins to the pressures exerted by several existing faults in the area, thousands of years back, that brought about the collapse of a huge coral shelf. The climatic contrasts of a subtropical dry forest in the lowest parts, which give way to transition climates in the cloudy forest, are easily distinguishable as one goes higher up the mountainous geography, complementing the experience with invigorating visual images of the different ecological niches that can be seen from the bottom up to areas of greater altitude.
ENRIQUILLO LAKE
The largest lake in the Caribbean originated from a former canal that connected the bay of Neyba with the bay of Porto Prince. This happened because of the sinking of the western part of the land and the sediments dragged by the Yaque del Sur River isolated the body of water that gradually continued evaporating because of the dryness of the climate, until forming what today we know as the Enriquillo Lake.
THE LARIMAR
At the eastern end of the Bahoruco Mountain Range, 10 km from the town of Barahona, lie the only two existing mines in the world that produce a semi-precious stone of a strange composition, an enigma to geologists, fascinating to tourists. Many researchers agree that it is a volcanic pectolyte, with particular characteristics and whose color evokes the different shades white foam, blue, turquoise, gray and the green of the Caribbean Sea, bathed by the gilded rays of the Antillean sun on the southern coasts.
CACHOTE
At one hour from Paraiso we came across another incredibly charming place: Cachote. This is a small village with barely 30 families situated on the Remigio hill, at about 300 thousand meters above sea level. The families, who subsist without either electrical energy or running water facilities, make a living from four commercial activities: coffee production, reforestation, cattle farming and eco-tourism. For those visitors who enjoy engaging in tourist activities in harmony with nature, will find in Cachote idyllic surroundings to let themselves be seduced by its untamed beauty. Its cloudy forest often covered by a dense humid air mass, lets you discover and watch along the interpretative footpath"the Jibijoa" , the rich fauna with numerous exotic birds, and the flora shown in all its splendor. The landscape includes bromeliads and wild orchids.
OVIEDO LAGOON
It is located in the National Park Jaragua in the province of Pedernales, and is a stretch of hyper saline waters, 27 km surface area and 1,5 Mts. in depth. The inner part has 24 rocky keys and mangrove swamps where colonies of iguanas Ricord live and migratory and endemic birds nest there. The bird fauna includes: the royal and blue heron, gulls, tijereta, cuchareta, pelicans, the endemic parrot and flamingos. This is considered to be one of the best places for bird watching in the Caribbean.
THERMAL WATERS AT CANOA
The thermal waters at Canoa, the delight of French and Japanese tourists for some years now, are beginning to draw the attention of local visitors and the rest of the world. The bluish color and the strong scent of sulphur in the lukewarm waters of Canoa, that usually reach up to 42° Celsius, are enjoyed by hundreds of visitors, who, stimulated by their curative properties, find in them the panacea of a natural relaxation agent and a regenerative balsam.
MAGNETIC POLE
Apart from being one of the main attractions in the community of Cabral, the Magnetic pole is a place that is embedded in mystery. Where the secondary road forks between the town of Barahona and the community of Cabral, you can see for yourself how a motor vehicle in neutral gear, parked on the lower part of the hill, apparently ignores the force of gravity and moves upwards by itself without any help from outside.
